विद्या भोगकरी यशः सुखकरी विद्या गुरूणां गुरुः ।
विद्या बन्धुजनो विदेशगमने विद्या परं दैवतम्
विद्या राजसु पूज्यते न हि धनं विद्याविहीनः पशुः ॥
Knowledge is man’s best beauty, secret hidden wealth; knowledge allows enjoyment and gives success and comfort. Knowledge is the preceptor of preceptors. Knowledge is a relative while going to a foreign place. Knowledge is the ultimate deity. Knowledge, not wealth is worshipped by Kings. (Indeed) a person devoid of knowledge is a beast (animal).
लक्ष्मीः स्थिरा भवतु गच्छतु वा यथेष्टम्।
अद्यैव वा मरणमस्तु युगान्तरे वा
न्याय्यात्पथः प्रविचलन्ति पदं न धीराः॥
The expert in ethics may criticise or praise, prosperity may stay or go away as per as will, death may be today itself or in another age; yet the courageous ones do not waver even a step from the righteous path.
बकास्तत्र न बध्यन्ते मौनं सर्वार्थसाधनम् ॥
Parrots and mynas are caged due to the fault of their own mouth(due to their talkativeness), while the cranes are not caged. Silence is the means to achieve all objectives.
रथस्यैकं चक्रं भुजगयमिताः सप्त तुरगाः
निरालम्बो मार्गश्चरणविकलः सारथिरपि।
रविर्यात्येवान्तं प्रतिदिनमपारस्य नभसः
क्रियासिद्धिः सत्त्वे भवितव्य महतां नोपकरणे॥
(Though) the chariot has one wheel, seven horses controlled with the reins of snakes, a road that is without support and even the charioteer is lame, yet the Sun surely reaches/ traverses the end of the endless sky everyday. (Indeed) the success of the task of great people depends on their own spirit and not on resources.
अल्पानामपि वस्तूनां संहतिः कार्यसाधिका।
तृणैर्गुणत्वमापन्नैर्बध्यन्ते मत्तदन्तिनः॥
Even the unity of insignificant things enables a task to be done, just as a rope made with grass can bind uncontrollable elephants, which are intoxicated by rut.
प्रथमवयसि पीतं तोयमल्पं स्मरन्तः
शिरसि निहितभारा नारिकेला नराणाम्॥
ददति जलमनल्पास्वादमाजीवितान्तं
न हि कृतमुपकारं साधवो विस्मरन्ति॥
Remembering the little water consumed in the early age, the coconuts which carry the load placed on their head give unlimited, sweet/ tasty water till the end of life to people. (Indeed) the virtuous people do not forget a favour done to them.
घटं भिन्द्यात् पटं छिन्द्यात् कुर्याद्रासभरोहणम् |
येन केन प्रकारेण प्रसिद्ध: पुरुषो भवेत् ||
येन केन प्रकारेण प्रसिद्ध: पुरुषो भवेत् ||
One should break a pot, tear clothes and ride a donkey. By some or the other way one should become famous/ popular.
