आद्यकृषकः पृथुवैन्यः | Adyakrushakaha Pruthuvainya Translation |
The first farmer Pruthuvainya
A kind named Pruthuvainya was the first coronated emperor on the Earth. King Pruthu’s capital was in the region of Prayag. At the time of his coronation, the bards were eager to sing songs in the praise of King Pruthu. Then the king ordered, “Wait, O Bards! I am not worthy of praise till my virtues become visible. Only the Almighty is praiseworthy.” Having known the selflessness of King Pruthu, the bards were pleased.
Once, King Pruthu was wandering in his kingdom. While wandering, he saw that his subjects had become very weak and incapable. The subjects were living like animals. They were eating food of inferior quality. Seeing that, the King got disturbed. Then the priest said, ”O King! All the things like wealth, grains, etc. are in the womb of the Earth itself. You must strive to obtain that.”
Then, King Pruthu got his bow ready. Having taken the form of a woman, the Earth appeared in front of him and said, “O King of Kings! Your father, King Vena was a bad ruler, who did not perform the duties of a King. Then, due to fear of thieves and robbers, I kept the wealth, grains, flowers and fruits in my womb. But, you are a King who is attentive towards the welfare of the subjects. If you do farming with efforts, I shall be pleased. Hence, give up the bow. Start farming along with your subjects by taking axes, ploughs, spades and sickles in your hand.”
Keeping the advice of Mother Earth in mind, Pruthuvainya used the water for agricultural work by obstructing the path of rivers. By harvesting rainwater, he brought about water management. He strives to make the land more fertile. Thereafter, people sowed the seeds of grains in that field. He collected and selected different types of seeds from various trees with efforts. After that, having treated the seeds, he sowed them carefully. After the rain, sprouts germinated from the seeds. All the subjects were satisfied after obtaining the grains. This King, who wanted to do the welfare of his subjects, became pioneer in administration on the Earth and was committed to the service of the people.
