नदीसूक्तम्। Nadisuktam Translation
नदीसूक्तम्।
(On the stage- Keertankar presents the keertan, the audience is engrossed in listening to it.)
Keertankar: O Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri, create a treasure (come together) on the Earth. The Ganga Dashahara Festival commences on the tenth day in the waxing (bright) phase of the moon in the month of Jyeshtha. The rivers should be worshipped during this festival.
Audience: Worship of rivers? Why should we worship the rivers?
Keertankar: Indeed, the river gives us life. Hence, on this occasion people offer lamps in the water to express their gratitude towards rivers. Having lit lamps in leaf bowls, they place (offer) them in the river water.
Water is for consumption, for farming (agriculture), for generating electricity, water is for sustaining life.
For living beings, the river is like a Goddess. The river is like a mother. Hence, today it is really worth listening and remembering the Nadisukta.
Audience: O great knowers of the Puranas, how can the river be considered as our mother? How have the rivers favoured us?
Keertankar: Listen, O noble ones, listen. This is indeed an ancient story. There was a great sage named Vishwamitra, the son of Rishi Kushik. He had come from afar along with the family and cattle. Traversing the path, he reached the confluence of the two rivers Vipat (Beas) and Shutudri (Sutlej).
(Then enters Vishwamitra. Saluting the river....)
Vishwamitra: How can I cross the flow of the rivers and how can I protect the cattle? How can I ask for a way to cross over? How can I seek the blessings of the rivers?
River Vipat: Indeed, who is this human? Why is he saluting and praising us? O noble one! What is your name? Why is he calling out to us?
Vishwamitra: O Mother! I am Vishwamitra. I have come from afar with chariots and carts. We all are eager to go to the other bank.
River Shutudri: O great sage! Indeed, your speech is sweet. It pleases us. Say, how should we assist you?
Vishwamitra: O Mother! Please listen to my request. Could you please become shallow for me? Please reduce your water current, by which we will be able to reach the other bank easily.
River Vipat: Indeed, Indra the Supreme Lord, who has the thunderbolt in his hand, released the river flow after slaying the demon Vrutra and gave me a path. I shall not disobey him, or else the Lord will become angry. Forgive me. Stopping is never ever possible for me.
Both the rivers: O Vishwamitra! We both cannot stop for you. We shall not disregard Indra’s work.
Vishwamitra: Never Mother! Let there be no disobedience to Indra. We only wish to go to the other bank of the river. O Mother! Be pleased. We all are your children only. We shall not do anything wrong that would disregard you. This is my promise.
River Vipat: What? This human address me as mother?
River Shutudri: How will a mother not help her own child? Good, O best among men, good! But what if your descendants forget this promise of yours?
Vishwamitra: No mother, this is not possible.
May all the rivers flow happily, may all the humans be happy.
(Vishwamitra exits)
Keertankar: In this way, having pleased the rivers, Vishwamitra went to the other bank. O listeners! In this way, the rivers and humans having pleased each other, expanded the culture and developed civilizations.
The river flowed, civilization developed and the humans who prospered due to the grace of the rivers were happy. Farmers were happy, the Earth blossomed, the Earth dark with crops was abundant in giving food. The river water was controlled by obstructing with dams, generators were used and life developed.
O great listeners! In this way, human life prospered on the banks of the rivers with the help of rivers. Now tell (me), do we, his descendants, really keep Vishwamitra’s promise?
Vishwamitra requesting the rivers to give him a way to cross over and reach the other bank |
