१) भूमाता पृथुवैन्यं किम् उपादिशत्?

The story of आद्यकृषकः पृथुवैन्यः from Rigveda describes King Pruthu’s transformation from a Kshatriya to a farmer for the sake of his subjects. King Pruthu was an ideal King who invented, initiated and developed agriculture. Hence, it is believed that the Earth is named पृथ्वी in the memory of King Pruthu’s work.

When King Pruthu was wandering in his kingdom, he saw the pitiable condition of his subjects. They had become frail and weak due to consumption of low quality food. The King’s heart melted out of compassion and his mind got filled with worry. When the priest told him that all the wealth in the form of grains was hidden in the Earth’s womb and he should strive to acquire it, he decided to strike an arrow into the earth.
Then, Mother Earth appeared before him in the form of a lady and advised him to do farming with the help of his subjects using various farm implements like spades, sickles, hoe, plough, etc. She told him that his father, King Vena was a bad ruler. So, to protect the wealth of grains, etc. from robbers and thieves, she kept it in her womb. She also praised the King’s righteous behaviour and assured him with her favour in agricultural work.
